Four Things You Can Do This School Year to Set Yourself Up for Greater Career Transition Success In the Future

WHAT TO DO THIS SCHOOL YEAR TO SET YOURSELF UP
FOR GREATER SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE
Hi there.
So, maybe you weren't counting on going back to school this year and you're disappointed that your job search didn't pan out.
It's okay - we all face setbacks from time to time.
But don't worry, there are still plenty of opportunities for you to build your experience and set yourself up for success in the future.
Check out the four tips below.

Volunteer for Opportunities to Train Other Staff Members
One strategic way to prepare for a career transition is by volunteering to lead training sessions or professional development for other educators and school staff.
Companies and organizations often favor candidates with experience supporting adult learners and building professional capacity—especially when hiring former educators.

Use Back-to-School PD as a Strategic Networking Opportunity
Back-to-school professional development sessions aren't just for learning—they're also prime opportunities to connect with the trainers and consultants delivering the sessions.
Many of them work for edTech companies, education consulting firms, or have launched successful consulting businesses of their own.
Take a moment to introduce yourself, compliment something specific about the session or product, and ask about their journey.
You might say something like:
“I'll be retiring from my school district in a few years, and I'm starting to explore career opportunities in the private sector—or possibly launching my own consulting firm.
What drew you to this role? How did you position yourself for success? I’d love to learn more.”
Don’t hesitate to ask if you can connect on LinkedIn or follow up with them later.
Most people are happy to share advice—especially with fellow educators who are planning ahead and looking to grow.

Take the Lead on School- or District-Wide Projects and Cadres
Leading grade-level, school-wide, or district-wide initiatives is another great way to build skills that translate beyond the school systems.
Many companies value candidates with project management experience—especially those who can demonstrate leadership, collaboration, and the ability to drive results.

Explore Part-Time, Temporary and light Project-Based Opportunities as You Prepare for Your Next Career Move
Lastly, many edTech and education publishing companies regularly hire part-time, temporary, and project-based consultants—including instructional designers, professional learning facilitators, assessment alignment specialists, and education policy advisors, etc.
While continuing to work your current position:
These flexible roles provide a practical way to:
· gain experience in new sectors,
· strengthen your resume, and
· build momentum toward your next career chapter

"Let's make this school year about setting both your students and yourself up for success.
Embrace the opportunity to enhance your skills
and grow together."
Remember, we all face challenges and setbacks at some point in our careers.
Stay proactive, keep learning, keep moving forward.
Stay Safe. Stay Inspired.
Stay Awesome!
